WHO CONTROLS THE SCIENCE?
Academic Publishing, Research Funding & The Censorship Debate
Dr Lisa Hutchinson | A WTF MEDIA® Original Production
Filmed at Hope Sussex
Who decides which scientific research receives funding, which studies get published and which findings reach the public?
In this thought-provoking presentation, Dr Lisa Hutchinson, former Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, examines the relationship between academic publishing, research funding, pharmaceutical companies and the institutions influencing scientific debate.
Drawing upon more than 17 years of experience in scientific and medical publishing, Dr Hutchinson offers an insider’s perspective on the commercial pressures, institutional relationships and editorial practices that she believes can influence scientific research.
Speaking at Hope Sussex, she explores the evolution of open-access publishing, financial incentives within academic journals and the challenges facing researchers whose findings question established scientific or medical positions.
The presentation also examines controversies surrounding COVID-19, pharmaceutical research, public-health policies, emerging technologies and wider questions about transparency, censorship and institutional accountability.
Throughout the talk, Dr Hutchinson shares her professional experiences, personal interpretations and concerns about scientific independence.
